Whitehall Inn & Canterbury Hotel – San Francisco, CA

project description
Complete renovation and seismic retrofit of a 4-story residential inn dating from 1915 located at 726 Sutter Street in San Francisco. The existing building construction is structural steel frame supporting wood floor and roof construction, and perimeter non-load bearing unreinforced brick walls. The new room plans required demolition of all interior walls which triggered compliance with SF Building Code seismic design requirements for existing buildings. The retrofit included strategically placed shotcrete shear walls at building ends, diaphragm strengthening and widened footings at shear walls. The existing elevator was extended into the lower basement level. The existing roof was strengthened to support new HVAC equipment. RCG provided complete structural engineering services from forensic investigations to final renovation/retrofit design and construction support services.
