Oak Center Towers – Oakland, CA

project description
The Oak Center Towers provides housing for low-income seniors. The construction of the 10-story tower consists of concrete topping over precast concrete planks at floors and roof supported by reinforced concrete block perimeter walls. Subject to strong ground shaking from the Hayward Fault, the tower was found to be vulnerable to collapse due to weaknesses at the bottom story. RCG performed comprehensive 3D analyses to confirm weaknesses and to test retrofit schemes. Seismic strengthening was determined to be necessary principally at the bottom story where new concrete walls and foundations were added including selective strengthening of the 2nd Floor. The retrofit was carried out with other ADA upgrades while the tower was largely occupied.
