Juliana Hotel, San Francisco

project description
RCG seismically upgraded the 9-story Kimpton Hotel (ca. 1915) to comply with the City of San Francisco unreinforced masonry building retrofit ordinance. The lower three stories were retrofitted with reinforced shotcrete applied to brick walls, while the “bolts-plus” method was used to anchor the brick walls to the floors in the upper stories. The design of shear walls located within the building’s U shaped light well core and along Stockton Street was configured to minimize impact on the restaurant at the first floor of the hotel. In 2006 under new ownership RCG provided structural services for alterations to reposition the hotel to a time-share property.
